ONO ISLAND

Discover Ono Island: A Hidden Gem in Orange Beach, AL

Nestled at the mouth of Perdido Bay, where Alabama meets Florida, Ono Island is a 5.5-mile-long barrier island offering a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Bordered by Bayou St. John to the north and Old River to the south, this exclusive community is a blend of natural beauty, rich history, and luxurious living.

A Journey Through History

Ono Island’s origins trace back to the 15th century when Spanish explorers christened it “Orinoco,” meaning “A place to paddle.” The island’s unique name, however, has its roots in a 19th-century territorial dispute. After President James Monroe annexed Spanish lands west of the Perdido River as part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, a hurricane in 1916 reshaped the island’s topography. When Florida tried to claim the land created by the storm, Alabama’s legislators famously retorted, “Oh no you don’t,” giving rise to the name we know today—Ono Island.

A Private Paradise

While much of Ono Island is geographically located in Florida, it is officially part of Alabama. The island, not within the limits of any municipality, is governed by the Baldwin County Commission. Development began in the 1970s, and today, over 1,100 homes grace the island, each a testament to architectural beauty and exclusivity.

Ono Island is accessible only via a private bridge, with 24-hour security ensuring privacy and peace for its residents. The community is self-sufficient, boasting its own water tower, fire station, and harbor. Residents enjoy an array of amenities, including two recreation centers, basketball and pickleball courts, a playground, a boat launch, and a community greenspace. The administrative center, known as Ono House, is the heart of the island’s community activities.

Luxurious Living and Notable Neighbors

Ono Island is renowned for its stunning, custom-built homes, many of which feature private boat slips. Home prices reflect the island’s exclusivity, with properties sometimes commanding prices of over $6 million. The community’s privacy has attracted a number of well-known authors, musicians, business leaders, and celebrities who seek a tranquil retreat away from the public eye.

Living on Ono Island offers more than just luxurious homes; it provides an unparalleled lifestyle. Residents often navigate the area by boat, enjoying easy access to local landmarks such as the Flora-Bama Lounge and the scenic sailing routes around Bird and Robinson Islands. The island’s prime location also places residents close to popular events like the Gulf Shores Hangout Music Festival and the Flora-Bama’s annual Mullet Toss.
